The Feminine Urge

In today’s jargon according to Know Your Meme “the feminine urge” refers to a concept and catchphrase used in memes to ironically describe female tendencies and traits. Although the earliest popularly known usage of the phrase was posted in 2009 on Twitter, the phrase received its most amount of usage in 2021. The feminine urge itself, however, dates back to the beginning of womenkind. It’s a natural inclination, not just a trend. Let’s talk about it.

The feminine urge is an innate drive in women to connect, nurture, and create. It’s a powerful force that has been present throughout human history and has played a critical role in shaping societies, cultures, and families. At its core, the feminine urge is about connection. This can be hard to fathom, considering modern conceptions of independent women and stereotypes insinuating that women are generally mean to each other. Outside of how we’ve been socialised, however, and seemingly at our biological core it would appear that women actually have an innate need to form deep, meaningful relationships with others.

The feminine urge is not just about being female; it is about embracing and celebrating the qualities that are traditionally associated with femininity. These qualities include strategic thinking, empathy, compassion, vulnerability, and intuition. They are often seen as weaknesses in a world that values strength, independence, and power. But the truth is that these qualities are what make us human and enable us to connect with others on a deeper level.

Another aspect of the feminine urge is our innate sense of intuition. Women are often described as “emotional,” but this label ignores the fact that our emotions are often rooted in a deep sense of intuition. We can sense when something is wrong, read between the lines, and pick up on subtle cues that others may miss. This intuition often enables us to understand the needs and desires of others. It’s a powerful force and a natural instinct that drives us! Remember, many women also have the unique ability to bring new life into the world. This is not to exclude women who experience challenges in this regard. The feminine urge is still very much a part of them.

Despite the undeniable importance of the feminine urge, it has been devalued and dismissed in many societies throughout history. Women have often been relegated to the sidelines, their voices silenced and their contributions ignored. But they have persisted, and the feminine urge has continued to shape our world in profound ways. Ignoring this urge comes at a cost. When we suppress our instincts, we become disconnected from ourselves and others. We may achieve success in our careers, but we may also feel unfulfilled and lonely. We may have material wealth, but we may also feel spiritually bankrupt. We may have power, but we may also feel isolated and disconnected from the world around us. So how can we tap into the feminine urge and embrace our natural instincts? Here are a few suggestions:
  • Cultivate self-awareness. Take time to reflect on your own needs and desires. Master the art of listening to your intuition and trusting your instincts.
  • Prioritize relationships. Make time for the people you care about, whether that’s your family, friends, or community. Create opportunities for connection and nurture those relationships.
  • Practice self-care. Take care of your physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. Make time for activities that nourish your soul, whether that’s spoiling yourself, yoga, meditation, or spending time in nature.
  • Embrace vulnerability. Allow yourself to be vulnerable with others. Share your fears, hopes, and dreams. When we allow ourselves to be vulnerable, we create opportunities for deeper connection and understanding.
This blog is just a friendly reminder, that if you’re trying to reconnect with your femininity, the idea is not to minimize yourself. The idea is to re-imagine your power and your presence and let it move you authentically.
